Solving an ‘Unsolvable’ Glass Restoration problem

< Back

I was contacted by Mathew who managed to save thousands of dollars by purchasing a secondhand Aquarium. The glass was "low iron" clear glass and has amazing clarity, but it is very expensive to purchase new. The only problem was that the tank was severely scratched on the inside by the previous only.

Mathew contacted multiple companies who were not interested in even looking at it for him. I picked up from the conversation on the phone that he really loved his aquarium. I had to see what I could do to help!  On viewing the tank I saw the scratches were very deep. An 8.5 out of 10 of severity. And algae was using the scratches to grow in. It was really taking away from the aesthetics of the aquarium.

Other companies are not interested in restoring Aquariums for one reason. Restoring glass in front of you with easy assess is a completely different task from restoring glass in an enclosed box. I had to work on my back, my side, and my back, while partially crawling inside the opening while holding the weight of the scratch removal system. It was very difficult! The tank was extremely heavy and also fragile. My experience working in the glazing industry and handling a lot of glass allowed me to do this safely.

On completion of the job, I visited Mathews's home to view the tank with the water and fish back in it. Seeing how happy he was with the result was very rewarding for me. It has pride of place in the lounge of his new home. His smile made the difficult working conditions of the aquarium completely worth it

“Gave Nick a very curly job. Bought an aquarium that had been badly scratched out and wanted it fixed. Almost everyone else didn't want to do it, but I found Nick to be excited  for the challenge! And the result speaks for itself, it's almost brand new in the end and looks fantastic, Nick gave me a daily update on his progress and was very easy to deal with. Would highly recommend.” - Mathew Maloney
